First open-heart operation in the Zone
On 16 June the team of the head of the Department of Cardiac Surgery, Dr Sartbai Tokonov, carried out the first open-heart operation in the Irad Special Economic Zone: coronary artery bypass with a heart-lung machine, for a 58-year-old patient from Talas. The patient's condition is satisfactory.
Until now patients needing heart surgery were sent to Almaty or to Turkey. Dr Tokonov trained in Moscow and Ankara and returned to Talas in 2008. The department will do planned operations from September.
